28th of Feb saw UCL students take
over London’s Hotel Russell for the Green Fashion Show, showcasing a stunning
collection of pieces all made from recycled, reclaimed and reworked materials.
From Ikea bags, to paperclips, photographs, to human hair, the collection
boasted an eclecticism of ideas with models taking to the runway in a series of
creatively stunning pieces. Alongside more directional pieces that are destined
to be worn on the catwalk only were a number of wearable garments; cute tea
dresses and sleek, sheer, shifts were a success, their fabric’s humble
beginnings barely recognisable after skilled reworking on the part of the
designers.
The event was
sponsored by, among others, 10:10, TRAID, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace.
The show’s success was not just a credit to the student designers and
photographers who made it happen, but also to the fashion industry itself,
which has seen the prominence and kudos of sustainable, ethical fashion soar in
recent years. This is only set to increase in the near future, with more and
more designers becoming ethically aware and looking to recycled materials for
their work. And with shows like UCL’s offering heralding the next generation of
environmentally aware designers, this is a trend that will not go out of fashion.
