LFW: Backstage at Kristian Aadnevik
18/09/2012 21:00:44 | 0 comments
Chief Hairstylist Teiji Utsumi: "The hair is very sophisticated and modern with a rock goddess/ 90s element. Think an early Kate Moss with a touch of Kurt Cobain! The texture is quite grungey - not too polished. We added body with Bumble & Bumble's BB Thickening Spray"

Chief Makeup Artist Elias Hove: "The look is super cute and fresh. The clothes were inspired by the colours and texture of a moth's wings and the soft smokey effect of the makeup reflects that too - especially the blurry green/blue colour of the eyelid. The skin is semi-matte - not too opaque with a slight flush of pink pressed into the cheeks and a nude lip. The one product that's been indispensable to us has been Neal's Yard Remedies' Wild Rose Beauty Balm - great for dry patches and for applying to lips.

LFW: Interview with MAC Senior Artist Lesley Keane
17/09/2012 17:04:47 | 0 comments

Yesterday, amid the flurry of London Fashion Week, Glass caught up with M.A.C's lovely Senior Artist Lesley Keane who has been working tirelessly backstage to help create the beauty looks for s/s13.

What shows have you just been working on?

Marios Schwab, House of Holland and Claire Barrow. I've got Philip Treacy tonight which I'm really excited about - his shows are always great fun!

What's been your favourite so far?

The makeup at Marios Schwab was amazing, with makeup artist Val Garland creating a  Navajo look with a strong bold black line which sloped upwards under the eyes - just stunning!

What trends have you seen so far?

There's definitely a 90s 'grunge girl' / rebellious teenager trend going on - everything has a smudged, unpolished 'walk of shame' feel to it - and the boyish brow is still going strong.  There are very few lip colours for next season; more emphasis will be on coloured lashes and coloured eyeliner.

There is also a 70s feel with eye shadow, with most of the looks focusing around the eye socket rather than expanding past the brow bone. And last season's trend for red/pink eye shadow is still going strong - we just have to counterbalance this with white liner on the inside of the eye to ensure the model's don't get that tired 'pink-eye' effect!

Working in different cities, how does each Fashion Week differ?

Milan is the most hectic backstage - the Italians are just so wonderfully passionate about it all!

Paris is the most chic (although being the last fashion week, the poor models are completely knackered by then!), whereas London and New York are where you're most likely to spot emerging trends.

How much do you have to prep the models' skin before working on them?

Skin makes or breaks a look. Usually with the hectic pace of Fashion Week, the girls' skin is parched, so I have to make sure I use a hydrating lotion and an exfoliator for any dry patches, as well as primer if their skin's looking a bit porous.

What's been happening trend-wise with skin over Fashion Week?

Skin for next season has quite a 'plastic' feel to it i.e. very opaque rather than letting the girl's natural complexion shine through. We've been mostly using the new M.A.C Mineralize Foundation, painting it on and pressing it in. I've also seen a lot of matte faces for next season with a powdery 'cashmere' texture. Contouring is a massive trend too.

We've also seen lots of highlighter, but instead of creams, artists are using shimmer powders for a lovely pearlescent glow.

How 'hands-on' are the designers when it comes to the makeup?

It really varies. A lot of designers work with the same key makeup artist over several seasons and there's a lot of trust there, so the designer is less 'hands on' in those situations. Others are keen to walk around backstage and oversee the whole process.

Do you think makeup is moving in a more artistic direction?

Definitely! Five years ago there was so much nude makeup, now thanks to people like Lady Gaga, it's definitely becoming more creative with interesting colours and shapes.

Who are your favourite beauty icons?!

I love all the old-school icons, so I guess it would have to be Bridget Bardot, Raquel Welch, and Claudia Schiffer. I love how Jane Fonda does her makeup too - you can tell she really 'knows' her face and what works and what doesn't.

And your favourite makeup era?

I think you're always drawn to the decade you grew up in, so for me it has to be the 80s! It was so experimental, with a real sense of artistry and glamour! I also love the 90s 'supermodel' phase.

Louise Gray Creates Topshop Make Up Range
11/09/2012 23:16:08 | 0 comments
Known for her clashing prints and joyous 80s punk/90s rave/acid trip-inspired creations, designer Louise Gray has created many clothing ranges for Topshop, but this is her first foray into make up. The result is a wonderful array of electric brights that would cheer up any beauty bag and which reflect Gray's eccentric personality to a tee.  Highlights include the Intensify blue glitter eyeliner (£8) and the Hat Trick nail colour - a gorgeous sparkling golden emerald without the watery texture that is the downfall of many glitter polishes (£6.50). There is also a fantastic Cream Blush Duo called Up in The Air - two gorgeous hues of pink and peach to add a pretty flush for instant babydoll chic.

Liner in Intensify £8

Nail Colour in Hat Trick £6.50

Cream Blush Duo in Up in the Air £12.50

But our favourite of the range has to be Legend lipstick, (£10). Never was a product so aptly named - we've had so many comments rocking this neon pink hue we've lost count. A truly eye-catching shade for when your make up is looking a bit blah and which is pretty enough to wear in the daytime as well as for evening. You can even house it in Gray's specially designed Lipstick Case, £8, which boasts the designer's signature prints on the inside and out. A fashion week handbag essential if ever there was one.

Lipstick in Legend £10

Lipstick Case £8

Louise Gray Make Up for Topshop is available now at topshop.com

New York Fashion Week: Beauty at Derek Lam SS13
11/09/2012 12:31:29 | 0 comments

After a decade of 80s-inspired excess, it seems the natural look is finally creeping back into the beauty spotlight - if Derek Lam's s/s13 show was anything to go by.

Tom Pecheux, Estée Lauder's Creative Makeup Director created a subtly sexy look, with fresh luminous skin and a delicate shimmer over cheeks and eyes, complemented by a nude/pink lip. â€œThe look is very feminine, very elegant and very discreet. Glistening aqua shades, see-through subtle colour and shimmer that reveal little by little.  Derek is not a show off. If you take time to discover his clothes close-up – you are wowed,†Pecheux commented.

2012: Our Top Scents So Far...
10/09/2012 15:09:07 | 0 comments

Dior - Escale Ã  Parati

Inspired by the beautiful little fishing town in Brazil situated in-between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on the Costa Verde, the scent is Francois Demachy's forth addition to the Dior Cruise Collection. The scent is like plunging into crisp, clear waters on a hot day in the tropics, with fresh  citrus notes of bitter orange, lemon and mint, while the addition of rosewood, red berries and tonka bean add a pretty, feminine touch. £52.50 for 75ml EDT at JohnLewis.com

Escada - Sexy Graffiti

A lively little number if ever there was one, Sexy Graffiti is inspired by a New York summer afternoon and is as bright and cheery as a pop of pink lipstick. Fruity florals can often veer into sickly, sugary territory, yet this one keeps the balance just right, with vibrant notes of strawberry and raspberry offset with lily of the valley and vanilla. £33 for 50ml EDT at debenhams.com

Versace - Vanitas Eau de Toilette

Following on from the success of Vanitas EDP launched last year, the eau de toilette version is a fresher alternative, yet still in keeping with the opulent glamour synonymous with the label. The scent is a lavish blend of cedar and rose petals with a rich heart of tiare flower, with smoky undertones of cedar and black tea. It's best worn with white blonde, waist length locks and a deep Mediterranean tan (not that we're imagining anyone in particular...). £49 for 50ml at debenhams.com

Gucci - Gucci Premiere

Fronted by glamorous gossip girl Blake Lively, Gucci Premiere has a soft 'old-school Hollywood' feel to it, caressing the skin like floating chiffon with warm effervescent top notes of orange blossom and bergamot. These soon give way to a seductive musky heart of white flowers and the scent bows out with rich woody base notes. The translucent chunky gold bottle is lust-worthy in itself. £64 for 50ml EDP at houseoffraser.co.uk

Valentino - Valentina Assoluto

A more seductive version of 2011's 'Valentina' (to paraphrase its creator Olivier Cresp), the fragrance is centred around an imagined muse Valentina, who one can imagine being similar to Audrey Hepburn's character in Roman Holiday: a china doll beauty with an impetuous streak running around in a fairytale-like Rome. With creamy, voluptuous notes of white Alba truffle, jasmine, tuberose and vanilla, the scent works best when worn subtly on areas like the nape of the neck and the inside of the upper arm. £61 for 50ml EDP at harveynichols.com

Jo LOVES - A Shot of Thai Lime Over Mango

Creator Jo Malone's inspiration for her collection of three mango-based scents came from sitting in the bar at The Four Seasons Hotel in New York and watching the barmen mix different ingredients to make cocktails. A Shot of Thai Lime Over Mango is like escaping to a lush tropical paradise, where the buttery sweetness of the mango is combined with zesty Kaffir lime and emboldened with black pepper and mint leaves. £45 for 30ml EDP at joloves.com

Topshop Unveils New Beauty Rooms
06/09/2012 12:21:30 | 0 comments

Since it opened in 1964, Topshop has grown from a small high-street store to a formidable fashion mecca, with teens and grown-ups flocking to its famous flagship store on Oxford Street to gorge on its affordable yet stylish fare. Meanwhile its high-end Unique range attracted the likes of Anna Wintour, Olivia Palermo and American rapper Azealia Banks when it showcased at London Fashion Week last season. The store has helped put British fashion (and the British high street) on the map in a big way - and it seems to be on its way to becoming the go-to location for cutting-edge beauty too.

The flagship store already has concessions of cult London salons such as WAH Nails, BLEACH London and Hershesons Blow Dry Bar, together with Topshop's own trend-focused beauty range (their Lip and Cheek Tint in Bitten Berry was our 2011 summer staple). So we were thrilled to find out that the store has revamped its beauty concessions on the second lover ground floor, turning them into one single space - The Beauty Rooms.

Now customers can book appointments from one main reception area, instead of having to wander tentatively into each concession space hoping to catch someone's attention. With the addition of new individual treatment rooms, you can go for the full works: enjoy some fantastic nail art at WAH; have your hair dip-dyed neon pink at BLEACH; get de-fuzzed at Strip; brows beautified at Blink; or even acquire a new tattoo or piercing at Metal Morphosis - a concession from the much-loved Soho parlour, beloved by Londoners and celebrities alike.

But Glass was most impressed with the Hershesons Blow Dry bar - perfect if you want a quick up do or sex kitten waves to take you from work to evening, with a number of on-trend styles to choose from. Thanks to the lovely Maurice at yesterday's launch, we emerged with glossy waves which looked as if they belonged in a L'Oreal Elnett commercial. We snagged a can of Hersheson's own version of Batiste Dry Shampoo on the way out to ensure the style stayed fresh - for a few days at least!

Browsing through Topshop's magazine after the launch, who did we spot? Our very own Beijing Fashion Editor Lucia Liu, posing with some stunning clutch bags!

Aerin Lauder Launches Lifestyle Brand AERIN
03/09/2012 22:57:51 | 0 comments
Today sees the launch of AERIN, the new lifestyle brand which is the vision of Aerin Lauder, former Senior Vice-President and Creative Director of her grandmother Estee Lauder's prolific beauty company. With this in mind, it's no surprise that the AERIN brand has debuted with two beauty collections before it branches out into other areas. And after Glass played around with the products at the launch this morning (a process which  involves copious dipping and dabbing), we were suitably impressed.

Created with busy, stylish women in mind the brand is a reflection of Aerin herself and her expert eye for style and design (her tumblr should give you a better idea). The beauty range consists of a permanent Essentials Collection and a limited edition Fall 2012 Colour Collection. Encased in pretty gold packaging (we're loving the gold lattice texture of the compacts) all the products carry a unique 'floral infusion' with a pleasant mood-lifting scent and skin-calming properties. As Lauder herself explains, "There's something so luxurious and feminine and special about flowers and I think they make you smile. That's why we did this beautiful floral scent in all the products."

The AERIN colour palette is a range of soft, wearable shades for a polished and pretty daytime look. We predict the solid Multi Colour for Lips and Cheeks (£30) from the Essentials Collection, will prove to be a winner from the range, as it gives an instant dewy glow to a tired sallow complexion. The Fresh Skin Compact Makeup (£37) is another highlight: a solid foundation which works just as well as a concealer with a rich, blendable texture.  Other creations include a stunning Brush Essentials collection (£120) with gold and dusty pink handles (many of which can usefully be balanced upright on a dressing table), as well as a Rose Hand and Body Cream (£36) carrying the same rich floral scent as the rest of the products.

The Fall 12 Colour Collection is equally noteworthy, especially the two palettes (£45) for respectively weekday and weekend, each comprising a host of warm, delicate shades, complemented by rich matte lipsticks (£24) and glosses (£22).

AERIN Fall 12 Colour Collection Weekend Collection

AERIN Fall 12 Colour Collection Weekday Collection

Glass recently spoke to acclaimed makeup artist Ruby Hammer who had this to say about the range. "I think the AERIN range is lovely. Because Aerin herself is a classy lady you buy into the lifestyle; by wearing the makeup, you can almost imagine you live in the Hamptons! The colours aren't 'razzle dazzle' wow but perfect for job interviews or a first date. Each item on its own is 'full proof' - in other words, one of those lifesaver products you reach for in your handbag when haven’t got time to waste - you just know it’s going to work."

The AERIN Essentials Collection and Fall 12 Colour Collection launch today and are available at Harrods and online at esteelauder.co.uk/aerin

New Makeup Range - Wild About Beauty
31/08/2012 10:35:11 | 0 comments

The launch of a new makeup brand is always guaranteed to turn our heads here at Glass HQ. Not least Wild About Beauty, a new range created by Louise Redknapp and Kim Jacob, comprising soft natural shades with a host of skincare benefits to boot. The products are also  free from parabens and petrochemicals.

Among our favourite products is the Golden Skin Glow tinting gel with Vitamin E (£21) which is great to mix in with your foundation or just apply onto bare skin for a sun-kissed complexion.  Another winner is their Rose Water Illuminating Serum (£22) which contains anti-aging ingredients such as organic rose water and caigua extract, whilst adding a dash of sparkle to the skin. We were also taken with the Ultra Sheer Powder Blush (£17.50) in 'Molly' which produces a soft, silky powder pink and is great for adding a subtle touch of colour; together with the Nutrilips Colour lipstick with SPF 15 in 'Betty' - a fresh pink with delicious moisturising ingredients including wild mango butter and argan oil.

Wild About Beauty launches September 27th, available at House of Fraser and wildaboutbeauty.com

Foundation Matching at the Click of a Button
29/08/2012 22:37:41 | 0 comments
We've all spent tedious amounts of time at beauty counters, swatching different foundation shades on arms, necks and backs of hands, trying to find our perfect match.  Happily, Boots No.7 have found an answer in the form of a clever device which is placed against the jaw and with a single 'beep' analyses skin colour using a combination of eight coloured lights and one ultra-violet light. It then matches it with one of No.7's brand new range of shades, which are available in a number of types and textures from matte to a healthy glow.

Our current favourite is Lift and Luminate (£16.50) which produces a beautiful radiant finish (after being 'zapped' we were matched  with our perfect shade). Other highlights are Restore and Renew (£16.50) with an anti-ageing complex especially good for mature skin and Essentially Natural (£9.95) for when you just want a hint of coverage.

The only downside? We were rather disappointed to have a foundation the same colour as our naturally pale skin when we'd prefer to look a bit more tanned. Luckily a sweep of bronzer over the top did the trick, while underneath our skin looked flawless without a single dreaded tide mark in sight.

The No.7 Foundation Match Made Service launches today and is available in Boots stores across the UK
