Band of Skulls' Emma exhibits paintings
23/01/2012 10:47:26 | 0 comments

Band of Skulls' album covers were homegrown don't you know... yes, their very own Emma Richardson is not just a BoS musician and vocalist but also a painter, who has created a series of works in response to the band's music. This is set to tie in nicely with the release of their second album, Sweet Sour. Richardson also produced artworks which were then digitally manipulated and used as inspiration for works by two glass artists, Cedric Ginart and Karina Guevin, which then formed the cover of their first debut album.

You can see Richardson's large abstract works explore the human form at the Londonewcastle Project Space this February. Keep your eyes open for other shows coming up at Londonewcastle Project Space, as they are fast racking up a great little rosta of exhibitions.

Cruisin' For A Bruisin' by Emma Richardson

Londonewcastle Project Space

28 Redchurch Street, E2 7DP

Thursday 2nd February - Sunday 12th February 2012

Open daily: 11am-6pm

And in Theatre Land...
04/01/2012 16:19:20 | 0 comments
Theatre attracts fans to many parts of the world but, says Viagogo, Europe's largest online ticket marketplace, Britain is the most popular. The best of British, from Lloyd Weber to Shakespeare, lured the biggest crowds, with The Phantom of the Opera and We Will Rock You topping the favourite musicals whilst plays like Anna Christie, The Children's Hour and One Man, Two Guvnors also saw theatre-lovers flocking. Of course, Shakespeare classics featured heavily in the popularity stakes, with Kevin Spacey's performance in Richard III just beating Katherine Tate's appearance in Much Ado About Nothing. Click here to see what's currently on for a cultural dose of theatre this month.

Viagogo’s Top 20 Most Wanted West End shows of 2011:

1. The Phantom of the Opera; 2. We Will Rock You; 3. Les Miserables; 4. One Man Two Guvnors; 5. The Woman in Black; 6.  Anna Christie; 7. The Wizard of Oz; 8. Richard III; 9. Much Ado About Nothing; 10. The Children's Hour

Going Solar: Christmas tree in Beijing
22/12/2011 11:26:33 | 0 comments
The Opposite House in Beijing has had a new addition installed in it's already art-saturated eco-friendly committed quarters: that of a solar Christmas tree. On display until 9th January 2012, the tree is constructed of 100 reclaimed solar thermal vacuum tubes used to harness the energy of the sun. The tree will be also lit with energy efficient warm white bulbs to enhance it's modern look.  The Solar logo on the tree was designed by the late Karl Duschenk while the tree itself was designed by Viessmann Heating Technology, the company aim to raise public awareness of how renewable energy sources can take shape and "play an important role in global sustainable development."

Promoting sustainability during the holiday season never looked so contemporary and so chic.

Maker's Eye delivers exquisite design
21/12/2011 17:31:14 | 1 comment
Bringing together around sixty established designer makers of high-end furniture and many of what can be called an objet d'art - those one-off pieces of rare-find furniture with lashings of wow factor - is Maker's Eye. The website launched very recently and from what we've seen on it so far, it will likely become a fine contender for the likes of Established & Sons and SCP. Boasting a fine selection of contemporary handmade furniture which can be purchased in the form of a readymade, made to order, bespoke or a commission, Maker's Eye offers the consumer an insight in to each designer maker's unique style and exquisite designs.

You can browse Maker's Eye via each individual Maker or via the Maker's Eye Showroom or you can visit their Commissioning service if you have specific ideas of your own. Some of the best designer maker's you'll find include artist in resident at the House of Commons, Fred Baier, stunning wooden interiors designer, Matthew Burt as well as unique and inimitable high design pieces from John Makepeace and couture fashion influenced pieces by John Galvin. Also note that you can have a piece of furniture made to fit any interior as a standalone piece, or if there's a certain corner in your private yacht that needs jazznig up, they can certainly help with that too.

Heineken's Bottles of the Future challenge
07/12/2011 15:16:45 | 0 comments
Heineken has just turned the ripe old age of 140 and to celebrate, they've launched a global Bottles of the Future design challenge which will result in one design team's ideas spread upon a limited edition pack, to be sold around the world. But here's where it gets interesting: the design collaboration will consist of a team of two strangers. Yes, Heineken are asking creatives to connect through social media to form design duos for their Bottle of the Future designs.

Budding designers have until 31st January 2012 to enter, so if you know anyone who's game, pass on news of the design challenge now. Entrants can download a design brief and toolkit including a template and Heineken assets from the Heineken Facebook page. The main task will be for designers to create a vision of how people around the world will connect with one another in the next 140 years. Once completed, you can upload your design online and then pick a stranger / another entrant's design to pair it with. You and your new design collaborator will then have formed a virtual design duo and your work gets submitted.

Whoever told us not to speak to strangers, forget it. Let the cyber design collabs begin...

For more info and details on how to enter, visit the Heineken Facebook page

Orient Express offers NYE abroad
06/12/2011 15:43:53 | 0 comments

NYE doesn't have to be about arguing over which local pub or overpriced club to go to. If you're desperate to escape the normal routine, then the below demand some proper consideration...

BALI

At Ubud Hanging Gardens in Bali, guests can experience a very typical Balinese New Year celebration. On New Year’s Eve the festivities will start with a cocktail reception set to the backdrop of live Balinese Keroncong, a traditional Balinese band incorporating the ukulele and stringed instruments. Following a dinner at the Beduur Restaurant and a performance from the children’s choir of Susut Village, the countdown to 2012 will begin with a mesmerising fireworks display over the Pura Dalem Segara temple. Prices for the dinner start from £61 per person. Rates for a Riverside Deluxe room at Ubud start from £317 including VAT per room per night including daily breakfast.

MALLORCA

To keep the festive spirit going after Christmas, hop on a two hour flight to Mallorca where La Residencia, in the artisan village of Deia, has created a very special New Year’s Eve experience. Guests can take their time to enjoy a long and indulgent New Year menu at gourmet restaurant El Olivo. At midnight, the Tramuntana Mountains that surround the hotel will be lit up with a fantastic fireworks display that guests can enjoy from the Son Moragues Terrace whilst they sip on their champagne. The celebrations don’t stop there, with a party in the Albeniz room carrying on into the early hours of 2012. The price for the New Year’s Eve dinner and dance is £312 per person. Rates for the New Years package start from £556 per room per night, based on a four night stay.

RIO

Occupying prime position on Copacabana beach in Rio, Copacabana Palace is located in the heart of Rio making it a glamorous venue to enjoy one of the world’s most exciting New Year’s Eve parties. Whether opting for the six-course dinner at the Cipriani Restaurant or for the party taking place in the Noble and Garden reception rooms, guests are in for a treat with an uninterrupted view of the spectacular Rio fireworks from the beach-facing balconies of the hotel. After the display, the party will continue on into the night, with fabulous Brazilian cocktails being served whilst the DJ spins his decks. Ticket prices start from £628 per person and rates for a City View room booking with the New Year package start from £3,382 for a minimum of five nights.
