Fall 2015 Haute Couture: Maison Margiela

Whether you love or hate him, John Galliano’s creative talent cannot be dismissed lightly. This season’s couture show marked the return of the infamous designer to the house of Margiela and brought with it a collection filled with encapsulating design.

In true Margiela fashion, the show incorporated a mix of bold and beautiful outfits, each taking on a life its own. One of the most remarkable details was the continuation of pattern onto the models themselves, as electric blue face paint and stencilled body art decorated each person and reflected the tone of the collection.

From tailored dresses to a heavy build up of fabric, the structure of the garments varied from each piece, uniquely crafting a different form on every model. There was a strong oriental theme as Galliano used colour and traditional pattern to hone in on Eastern design, whereas the shape and cut of the outfits was reminiscent of a Geisha. Obi belts created cinched in waists and puffy fabric exaggerated curves, highlighting effortless femininity.

Although Galliano the man has had quite a negative impact on industry, Galliano the designer has once again produced a unique, eccentric collection with exceptional detail and is really living up to the Margiela name.
