Fall 2015 Haute Couture: Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier dominated the runway today with what at some points felt like a nautical feeling show for the fall season. Juxtaposing a typically spring style for fall and doing it the only way Gaultier knows how – with flair.

The first section of the collection revolves around maritime stripes – they’re on just about everything, including one dress that is made up of nothing else. They continue to appear on tights and high socks throughout the rest of the collection giving it a cohesive vibe.

Many of the models in the first half of the show were sporting small navy style hats, which later graduate to captain’s haberdashery with more structured and architectural suits that are gleaming with Gaultier’s style.

As the collection moves on, the dresses got larger, the hats got higher, and the hemlines, longer. Everything became more dramatic and intense. Almost as if it were a day by the sea, starting out in sweat dresses with striped tights and moving to an elaborate evening that is to be filled with cocktails and music.

The architecture in the collection is one of the most fascinating aspect of the collection. Dresses with structured necklines, the captain-style suits that are loaded with angles, and the perfectly round skirt style – Gaultier signatures – that seems to continue to make an appearance in the show. It’s all a feast for the eyes that comes to a POW at the end with a patterned gown that seems to be constructed out of nothing but fur pelts.

Gaultier simply continues to show that he is a master of couture. And he’s still having fun with design and creating collections that are flawlessly made and dazzling to behold. This man is not getting pushed anywhere by his younger competitors, he is still creating fashion.
