2014 Sony World Photography Awards L’Iris d’Or and competition winners revealed

The 2014 Sony World Photography Award have been announced at a gala ceremony which took place in London.

The first place overall and in the Contemporary Issues category, is taken by the American photographer Sara Naomi Lewkowic, who unanimously won the coveted L’Iris d’Or out of 139,554 entries .

Lewkowic, having a career including studies in journalism and visual communication, many publications and awards, attempts with her project, Shane and Maggie, to examine thoroughly and fearfully domestic abuse as a horrific process as well as the inescapable short and long-term impacts on the victims and on their social circles.

Additionally, Che Li, an over 30 years keen amateur photographer, was awarded the Open Photographer of the Year, with her determined winning image ‘Rain in an ancient town’.

The World Photography Organisation also awarded a number of other major winners in the competition; their winning series of work from still life, conceptual and architectural images to witty images of wet dogs, portraitures, nature and wildlife, inspiring the viewer to find something surprising within the everyday life.

The L’Iris d’Or winning series of work, alongside those of the other winners announced at the awards, will be displayed as part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition, until May 18, at Somerset House.
